HOMER COURTHOUSE ON THE SQUARE

The center of Homer is dominated by a beautiful courthouse, the seat of Claiborne Parish government since 1860 and one of the oldest public buildings in continuous use in the state of Louisiana. This antebellum edifice is a classic example of Greek Revival architecture and is the symbol of the town and parish.

HERBERT S. FORD MEMORIAL MUSEUM

Visitors to the Ford Museum will step back in time and experience life as it once was in Homer and Claiborne Parish. Herbert S. Ford first began his collection of artifacts in 1918, following his return from World War I, when one of his sons brought a German helmet home from the town’s dump. He continued to add to his collection until his death in 1960, after which his family donated the collection to the town.

Located on the town square of Homer, the building that houses the Ford Museum was built in 1890 as the Hotel Claiborne. The museum’s permanent collection reflects the life and culture of Claiborne Parish from its earliest known inhabitants, the Kadohadacho  Native American tribe, to the oil boom at the turn of the 20th century.

Featured exhibits include a cypress dugout canoe found on the banks of the Sabine River, a one-room pioneer cabin built around 1860 and the original judge’s bench from the Claiborne Parish Courthouse, which was completed in 1861.

GOLF COURSES

Claiborne Parish boasts something many cannot – two golf courses. Homer and Haynesville golf courses are 9-hole public courses. Daily green fees or memberships are available, along with cart rentals and pavilions for family outings. Courses are open year-round.
